Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is typically used to correct excessively large or protruding ears. In most cases, this procedure is performed on kids between four and 14, but it may also be done on older children and adults. The key benefits of ear surgery include less teasing, improved confidence and self-esteem, and greater comfort when sleeping or dressing. For young children, Dr. Carp might suggest general anesthesia so your child can sleep during the surgery. For adults or older kids, he may opt to use local anesthesia alongside a sedative.
Ear surgery generally takes between two and three hours, but more complex procedures can take longer. The technique used depends on the problem and its severity. The most common technique involves an incision on the back of the ear, which exposes the cartilage. Dr. Carp then sculpts it and bends it back closer to the head. Non-removable sutures may be placed to keep the ear in position.
Similar to the first technique, the second also involves an incision on the back of the ear. Some skin will be removed and used to help the ear cartilage fold back. This resculpts the ear without cartilage removal. Ear surgery may leave a minor scar, but this fades gradually and is hidden by the ear itself.
