Liposuction is a body sculpting procedure that targets excess fat in isolated areas such as the hips, knees, arms, chin, abdomen, thighs, neck, and cheeks. Much of the time, these fat deposits fail to respond to diet and exercise. The procedure may also be referred to as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy.

Different kinds of anesthesia may be used during liposuction. Dr. Carp will work with you to decide the best anesthesia option for your individual needs and comfort. Once the anesthesia has been applied, a small incision is made in the treatment area. Then, a long, narrow tube known as a cannula is inserted and moved in a back and forth motion. This movement breaks up the fat cells, allowing the cannula to vacuum them up more easily. If you're having several areas treated, Dr. Carp will move from one area to the next while making an effort to create as few incisions as possible, thereby minimizing the number and appearance of scars.
