Aftercare Instructions for Neurotoxin and Dermal Fillers
After injectable treatment, mild swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising can be normal. These instructions are designed to support healing and help reduce irritation during the first several days after treatment. Please follow any specific instructions given by your provider, as recommendations may vary based on the area treated and the product used.
This page is intended as general aftercare guidance and does not replace medical advice from your injector.
What Is Normal After Treatment?
After neurotoxin or filler treatment, it is common to notice:
- Mild redness
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Bruising
- A feeling of firmness or small bumps in filler-treated areas
These symptoms often improve over the first several days. Some filler-treated areas may continue to soften and settle over the next one to two weeks.
Right After Your Appointment
- Use a cool compress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time as needed today. Do not place ice directly on the skin.
- Keep the treated area clean and avoid unnecessary touching, rubbing, or pressure.
- If you had neurotoxin treatment, remain upright for the first 4 hours after your appointment.
- If you had filler treatment, do not massage the area unless your provider specifically instructs you to do so.
What to Avoid for the First 24 Hours
- Strenuous exercise
- Alcohol
- Saunas, hot tubs, hot yoga, or other heat exposure
- Excessive cold exposure
- Makeup for 12 hours
- Unnecessary rubbing or pressure on treated areas
Skin Care After Injectables
- Cleanse gently after 6 hours using mild soap and water.
- Avoid aggressive exfoliation or rubbing.
- Use sunscreen daily, ideally SPF 30 or higher.
- Wait until the next day before resuming active skincare if the area feels irritated.
Neurotoxin Aftercare
This section applies to Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, Xeomin, and Daxxify.
- Stay upright for 4 hours after treatment.
- Avoid rubbing, pressing, or massaging the treated area for the rest of the day.
- Avoid tight hats, headbands, goggles, or anything that places pressure on the treated region if applicable.
- Results usually begin to appear within 2 to 7 days, with full effect often seen around 10 to 14 days.
- Most neurotoxins last about 3 to 4 months, although Daxxify may last longer in some patients.
Dermal Filler Aftercare
- Mild swelling can make the area look fuller at first.
- Final filler results are usually easier to judge after 1 to 2 weeks.
- Do not massage or manipulate the area unless directed by your provider.
- Avoid dental work, facials, lasers, and chemical peels for 24 to 48 hours unless your provider advises otherwise.
- Filler duration varies by product and treatment area, but many fillers last about 6 to 18 months.
Medications and Supplements
Unless medically necessary or prescribed, try to avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements that may increase bruising, such as:
- Aspirin
- Ibuprofen
- Fish oil
- Vitamin E
Always follow the guidance of your prescribing physician before stopping any medication.
